Stylist on Call

Wella Opens Midwest Studio

The Studio has finally opened in the Midwest—in downtown Chicago, to be exact. Our Elizabeth Yong was on hand to document the celebration and education.

The Studio has finally arrived in the Midwest, downtown Chicago to be exact. I attended the opening day festivities not sure what to expect. A little mixing and mingling or hair demos? Both to be exact.

The presentation opened with some background on why The Wella Corporation opened this location. They hope it to be a stimulating learning environment where Midwestern hairdressers can gather to learn and be inspired. This is their 128th worldwide Studio location.

After the intro, Diva and Adam demonstrated looks from the latest Sebastian Professional collection, “Hollywood Noir.” (I was familiar with some of the looks since some of the styles were submitted for magazine edit.) The inspiration for the collection is the roles we play every day and how we want people to see us.

While Diva performed a back-cutting technique onstage, Adam introduced Trucco’s new Fall 07 make-up collection. The focus was on the eyes with a quasi-sheer lip and bare cheeks. He encouraged creative uses of the make-up and demonstrated some techniques.

Along with a swath of lace, he filled an airbrush with liquid eyeliner and created floral lace patterns on the models’ wrists and arms. On another model he created a temporary “tattoo” on her décolleté by “drawing” with the liquid eyeliner. To keep the “tat” party-ready all night long, mist it in place with Sebastian Shaper.

Diva and Adam’s final look was an avant garde style where the model’s hair was weaved into a honeycomb-looking fabric which Diva pulled her hair through with a crochet hook. The final creation was a very curly faux-hawk with bold make-up.

Next Christopher and Sonya Dove presented looks from their Trend Vision 07 release. There were two models each representing the following trends: Pop Couture, Nordic Serenity, Sensual Intrigue and Rustic Deluxe.

On her finished model Sonya explained the S-shaped color placement on the asymmetrical cut in Pop Couture. Swept to one side, the bangs and longer bits displayed bold bright colors while in the reverse, the bold color shows only on the longer ends.

Christopher performed a razor cut on one of the Sensual Intrigue models. He carved the top and sides to accentuate the model’s face and jaw line. The back length remained and he showed how it could be tucked under for a “short” finish.

I think it is very exciting to have an advanced-learning academy in the heart of downtown Chicago (although the parking is a bit pricey). To think that the very same techniques I witnessed were also taught at the other 127 Studio world-wide locations shows that education can indeed break down barriers.
